GREENLAND - AN AERIAL VIEW

A dream came true a couple days ago during my return from Europe to the American continent. I have seen Greenland from an airplane before but never actually flew across it during day light. When I saw on the screen in front of me that our route was north of Iceland, I knew there was a chance to see the world’s largest island. Luckily there were no clouds. The mighty glacier below is flowing slowly to the North Atlantic Ocean, somewhere in the haze at the horizon.

The photo was shot through through the blue tinted window of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. This aircraft has electronically dimmable windows to keep the UV light out, but even if set to maximum opacity, a blue color cast is still inevitable. I didn’t want to miss this gorgeous view and quickly used the camera in my phone and tried to remove some of the color cast in Adobe Lightroom Classic. Not perfect, but good enough for a memorable moment.

THE OLD RULE

I had an early flight yesterday morning from Las Vegas to Chicago. The sun wasn’t even high enough to touch the desert and mountains below after we had crossed Lake Mead, but its first light was reflected nicely by the clouds north of us and the inlet cowl of the jet engine nacelle on our aircraft. The Nikon Z6II was safely stored in my luggage in the overhead compartment and so the old rule, that the best camera is always the one you have with you, was confirmed to be true ones again. I shot this quickly with my iPhone camera before this brief and magical moment was over.

RARE VIEW

Coast of Greenland ---------

Hello friends, we are back from a delightful trip to Europe. Events with family and friends were at the center stage and I took a backseat with my photography this time. It was nice to take a break from social media and everything around. Sure, some pictures were taken but I wasn’t serious beyond creating some memory shots.

On our final flight from Zürich / Switzerland back to Chicago the pilot had to take a different route than usual, due to a strike of French air traffic controllers. This gave us the chance to see the southern coast of Greenland. I have flown many times between Europe and America during the last 22 years but it was only the third time that I have seen Greenland from an aircraft. Most of the time the route runs further south. Luckily Joan and I had seats on the right side of the plane and we were able to enjoy this rare view with ice and snow covered mountains and ice floats in the water of the Greenland Sea in the North Atlantic Ocean.

FASCINATING WINTER WORLD

Hi friends, I’m back from the moon! (just kidding…). The photo was made today during a flight from Denver to Chicago. Business required my presence in Colorado this week and the only camera that was in the pocket was my iPhone. I don’t know the exact location of this shot, it was somewhere between eastern Colorado and western Nebraska. It was fascinating how every little creek and water vein was filled with snow or ice, while other parts of the fields below showed the blank soil. Back home here in the Little Maquoketa Valley in eastern Iowa the reality was more disenchanting. We don’t have any snow on the ground, very unusual for this time of the year, but the weather forecast says this may change during the next few days…

GOING OUT WEST

Rocky Mountains, Colorado -----------

Today I have nothing but a picture made with the camera in my phone through the window of a Boeing 737-800 on my way from Chicago to Las Vegas, Nevada. This was not my final destination and I’m writing these lines from a hotel in Reno, NV, where I will stay during a business trip over the next few days. I’m always excited to fly over the Rocky Mountains, especially since Joan and I have been at several locations in the mountains of Colorado during recent vacation trips. It seems always difficult to identify part of a landscape from high up in the air, even if you think you know the area. Shooting through the window of tinted plastic in an airplane may always lead to goofy looking colors, and processing the image on my 2008 notebook may not be the best recipe to produce a quality image. But some guy smarter than me said before, the best camera is always the one you have with you… My photo gear was safely stored up in the overhead compartment and it would have been a long story to explain why I didn’t even try to get it out of the bag…
