AFTER THE RAIN

This photo may leave the question, what is really the subject here? Is it the remains of the old stockyard in the foreground, the impressive clouds in the background, or even the rainbow that appeared while the rain front moved out of the area? For me it is the overall mood of the weather, combined with the warm light from the low sitting sun on the wood of the livestock pens. None of each mentioned element in the frame would stand out on its own, it’s the light and colors that bring it all together for a memorable image.

MEMORABLE MOMENT

Double rainbow above North Portland Harbor, Columbia River between Washington and Oregon

There is no better way to start a spring vacation at the coast of Oregon than with a photo of a double rainbow and some killer light on the house boats across the Columbia River in Portland, OR. We were eating dinner and enjoyed a good West Coast beer in the restaurant of our hotel last night when this act of nature unfolded, just outside of the window. We dropped fork and knife immediately and ran out onto the hotel terrace with the camera in hand. Other people saw obviously the potential for a good shot with their cell phones and followed us shortly after, and even our waitress stepped outside and enjoyed the play of light.

The warm colors of the houses in the setting sun on Tomahawk Island in the Columbia River would have been a great subject by themselves, but the two rainbows after a mostly rainy gray day made it a memorable moment… More to come, so please stay tuned.

MIDSUMMER RAINBOW

It is these brief moments that can make a walk in the evening very delightful. A couple days ago a thunderstorm moved just south of us and created this nice scene. Landscape photographers love rainbows, but it was the cloud that puts the ice on the cake for me.

MISSISSIPPI RIVER STORIES 2020 #7 - RAINBOW BEFORE SUNSET

Mississippi River, Mud Lake, Iowa

Visiting the Mississippi River during the hour before sunset can always lead to a good surprise. A couple days ago we took our dog Cooper down to Mud Lake, one of his (and our) favorite places. The rain cloud you see in the second image moved in quickly from the northwest. The rain drops started falling and we rushed back to the car. Suddenly a full fledged rainbow appeared right over the big river. Who cares about a few drops, but the dilemma was that I had the Nikkor 70-200, f/4 on camera, too long to capture the full rainbow while it lasted. The compromise was to shoot one end in tall orientation as you see it here. 

I was hoping for more, ran back to the car and changed lenses quickly. The Nikkor 16-35, f/4 has everything what it needs for a full rainbow, but the cloud had moved on to the southeast and with it what was left of the rainbow. Still one of the occurrences that will be remembered on the positive side for this crazy year…
