Some projects take a long time to become reality and some take even a little longer…😉

I just finished a new set of VISUAL STORIES here in my blog. The collection THROUGH THE DAKOTAS is finally online and you can find it by clicking up in the “Collections”-bar or by clicking right HERE. Some of the photos about a journey through the Black Hills and different “Badland” areas in the Dakotas have been previously posted in my blog a while ago and a coffee table book “BADLANDS - North and South Dakota” has been created as well. The only thing missing was a slide show in the blog. Well, as people in Germany say, …. gut Ding will Weile haben!

NATURE CLICKS #343 - HERRING GULL

Making a picture of a Gull is not too difficult, they are usually anywhere near a big body of water. It has to be something special involved, like a great natural light situation or a story telling aspect that can make a photo of an ordinary bird, like a gull, standing out from the rest. This Herring Gull was interestingly enough the only gull we saw during one of our kayak tours on Marie Louise Lake in Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada. It just had caught a fish and was still messing with it as we drifted towards the shore with our boats. Usually a gull takes off and flies away if you get too close but this one didn’t want to give up the fish at all costs.

It is the low perspective that makes these shots special for me and the pictures from this incident tell the story.

AGAINST THE RULES

Canada Geese, Green Isand Wetlands, Iowa

The Hooded Merganser wasn’t the only bird taking care for their offspring last weekend in the Green Island Wetlands. I saw several pairs of Canada Geese with little goslings, mostly between 2 - 4. The female goose incubates the eggs, but other than the mergansers both parents are involved in the care taking for the young ones. Canada Geese mate for life.

This family had just crossed the road in front of me, from one pond into the next lake. I know, butt shots are supposed to be rude but Ansel Adams said already, there are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs…

I saw the story in this photo when I made the click. One parent was leading the way, the other one kept an eye on me and made loud warning noises. Fill flash helped again to bring out the colors of the goslings and to overcome the gray of the overcast. There are only a few reflections of the sky on the water and the green of the algae infested water dominates the background. Many things came together in this image and that’s why I like it.

VISUAL STORIES - COAST OF MAINE

I’m excited to announce that my latest photography project has been finished. It is called VISUAL STORIES- COAST OF MAINE and you can find it by clicking on the COLLECTIONS - tab above (or just HERE). The photos in this slide-show-like gallery are an excerpt from a book about the coast of Maine that I created already last year. I can tell you, it is the most difficult task during the whole process to downsize the number of pictures even more from an already existing project, like a book. The book is much bigger but I wanted to show you the essence of what we have seen, without making it too big. The coast of Maine is a wonderful place and has so many different things to offer. I want the photos tell the story about this great part of New England in the Northeast of the US, hence the title VISUAL STORIES. I hope you enjoy.
