WHAT DO YOU SEE?


Winter is the best time to dig out photos from the library to give them maybe some well deserved attention. During a paddle trip on Bear Head Lake in northern Minnesota in the fall of 2023 this eroded root system of a spruce along the shore intrigued me. Any time I look at this photo I see different things and a new story. Nature is always fascinating.

FROM ABOVE AND BELOW


When we brought family from Germany back to the O’Hare airport in Chicago earlier this year we spent a couple days in downtown Chicago, visiting the Field Museum, exploring the iconic architecture of the city, and of course eating some good food. Seeing Chicago from above is always fun and so we went up to the observation deck of the John Hancock Center on the 94th floor and enjoyed a 360 degree view over the city and far beyond.

This is usually a pretty busy place and a photo like this one seems to be impossible because there are always people pressing their noses against the windows. Being up there mid morning made the view to the south the least desirable due to back-lighting and haze. But when I saw this corner of the observation deck suddenly complete empty and the shadows of the windows on the floor, I knew I had a shot. Exposing for the highlights emphasized the contours of the Chicago skyline. The ice on Lake Michigan on the left side was the hottest spot in the picture and the rest rendered nicely silhouette-like. Although I didn’t take the time to set the preview in the viewfinder to black & white, it was what I felt was right for this photo and converting the RAW file to B&W was the logical consequence. The distorted reflections from the streets below on the glass above the windows make for an unusual effect.

With its X-bracing on the tower’s facade, 875 North Michigan Avenue, former John Hancock Center, is easy to identify among Chicago’s skyscrapers.

WAY TO GO


Fall has many ways to tell us that the growing season is over and nature gets ready for hibernation and all the other things we associate with the season before winter. I made this photo about two weeks ago up in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. This was at a little pond, nestled between endless woods and next to a swamp. The trail cameras of a friend prove that deer, bears, and wolves call this area home, even if we hardly ever see them during the day.

The cattails I found at the shore are called ”Kanonenputzer” in the area where I grew up in Germany. This means loosely translated ”canon cleaners”. Maybe you agree that this name describes the plant as good as the english term ”cattail”.

Enough about names, it was the gorgeous side light that made the decaying cattails and grasses stand out. The water of the pond and the woods in the background are pushed back by a strong underexposure, letting the shapes and details of the plants tell the story of a sunny afternoon on a beautiful day in autumn. To me color meant nothing in this image, it was all about the light, contrast, and shapes of the subject. I thought Black & White was the way to go.

HAVING AN EYE ON THE SKY

I spent a lot of time this week in my car, driving through the countryside for some business appointments far away. Sometimes it can be a little boring, but when puffy clouds show up in the sky I watch how they develop. There wasn’t much traffic when this thunderhead got some interesting light and when it was right behind this farm at the horizon I knew I had an opportunity for a picture. No distracting power lines in the foreground, no other cars around, just perfect for a brief stop. Two minutes later I was on the road again, this time with a smile in my face… 😊

HAYSTACK ROCK AT ANY WEATHER

The coast of Oregon is not a place that has sunshine all the time, especially at this time of the season. There were quite a few hours during our explorations and hikes along the shore when the colors were muted. But rain, fast moving clouds, and the surf on these stormy days created drama and the question I asked myself was, how can I make it visible in my photos? Seeing in black and white and envision how the final picture may look needs practice and I certainly could use some more of that.

The photo was made at low tide in the town of Cannon Beach. The iconic Haystack Rock attracts many people and it has been photographed probably several million times before. I did not go too low with my tripod because I wanted to have a bit more of the surf in the frame. To give the waves a sense of movement and keep the mist in the air visible I exposed 2 seconds at f/7.1. I tried longer and shorter times but this seemed to lead to the most harmonious results. The pattern in the sand changed quickly and it required reposition of the camera several times for some lines with reflections and shadows. Crushing waves broke frequently on this basalt sea stack and I was able to capture one of these moments. Who says you can’t make a photo on a stormy and rainy day…? 😉

LESS IS MORE…


I can’t deny that I love architecture that is comprised by the use of glass and steel. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, a German-American architect and pioneer of modern architecture has created several iconic buildings in Chicago after his emigration from the Nazi regime in Germany to the United States. I do not know who designed this modern apartment complex in downtown Chicago, but the design was maybe influenced by Mies van der Rohe’s architectural mission and principles. I loved what I saw when I had the building in the viewfinder of my camera and in particular the reflections of the clouds on the glass surfaces and the contrasty appearance overall. I admit, it was a ”shot from the hip” while walking from the hotel to a favorite dinner restaurant yesterday evening. There was a lot of blue in the frame, from the sky and bounced back from the glass surfaces. Mies van der Rohe is often associated with the fondness of the aphorism "less is more” (source: Wikipedia), and that’s what I remembered when I decided to render the image in B&W. It just reflects my own vision of modern architecture photography.

I know, some friends and followers of my blog asked, what’s going on, where are your latest photos about nature at spring time? Well, the duties of my regular job keep me very busy at the moment and a home improvement project took the rest of the time during the last couple weeks. Some new things will come soon, so please stay tuned…

WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY


Today is World Photography Day, the day whereby we pay tribute to the incredible art form that is photography. For me it’s a good reason to dig out some photos that were made earlier this year while spending time with good friends over in Germany. This was in the Margraviate of Brandenburg, a lovely area just north of Berlin. We went on a paddle trip with kayaks and stopped at a little lake shore bistro, where the fish they caught went right into the smoker and was served with fresh ”Brötchen”. Of course, we added some beer to the meal!

And that’s what I like to point out today. There is the image we make with an artistic intent and there is also the shots we make just for the memory of a great moment in life. Sometimes it can be all in one picture and sometimes it’s better to keep them separated. I’m sure all camera owners can tell a story about their photos today. Let’s keep it coming, not just on World Photography Day…!

STILL LOVE THE RED FILTER

If you camp out west in a small tent it is mandatory to have always an eye on the weather. This approaching thunderstorm turned out relatively harmless. It came with a little bit of lightning, not even close, and some rain for the night. Letting this opportunity to make a photo pass by was not an option. The question was, how to capture the drama in the sky?

Back in the days of black & white film a red filter in front of the lens was the way to go. We made the click and then waited for the results until the film was developed. Today with a mirrorless camera things are a lot easier. While shooting always in RAW format, all what it takes is to set the camera to B&W and include the settings for a red filter (or any other setting you may have in mind). In the viewfinder or on screen in the back of the camera we can then evaluate the results immediately and decide if it matches our vision for the final image. If not, we can always revert to the color data embedded in the RAW file and let our creativity go in a different direction.

The results for this photo match pretty much the settings I had used already in the camera. I like the drama a red filter can produce. Very little is tweaked in post process on the computer at home. The landscape doesn’t take the stage, just gets a hint of light, while the clouds are clearly the subject that tells the story of this evening ten days ago in the Badlands.

WINTER WONDERLAND RESTORED


The view into the valley wasn’t pretty during the last days, with the old snow from earlier this year almost gone. But a new thick layer of the white stuff poured on us again all morning. It was very wet snow and it did cling to the trees. “Winter Wonderland” restored, even if it was only for a few hours…

The deciduous forest here, without its leaves, bares a lot of distractions that often do not work for a photo very well. The chaos of branches is reduced by their snow cover, they stand out and it almost becomes a texture. Using black and white for the final image emphasizes the beauty that we saw today while looking at the trees above the valley below.

OZARK MOUNTAINS (7)

The majority of time in the Ozarks we had blue skies and sunshine, but the few days with clouds, rain, or fog were actually the ones I enjoyed a lot more for photography. It seemed like we had to wait all summer long for the mood a foggy landscape can provide and that I like so much.

This meadow in Petite Jean State Park, Arkansas was actually an overflow campground, probably used in the summer when camping space in such a popular location is in high demand. Well, at his time of the year nobody was there and these wonderful pines, hugged by the fog, were just the right subject for a photo. Color’s didn’t play any roll and selecting black and white as my medium was a choice quickly made. A campground usually comes with some men-made facilities, like electrical outlet boxes, water faucets, or garbage containers. There were a few of these items visible between the trees in the background, but for such items, that just do not contribute to the photo, I don’t hesitate to use tools for content-aware replacement in Adobe Photoshop. What you won’t see in any of my nature images is sky replacement or any manipulation that changes the context of the subject.

OZARK MOUNTAINS (4)


Grasses in the river bed, Haw Creek Falls, Ozark Mountains, Arkansas

Today I have something for the more art-minded viewers. In my first blog post about the Ozark Mountains about a week ago I mentioned the challenge to find interesting details in the landscape. Deep in the woods of the Ozarks we checked out a campground at Haw Creek Falls. The summer was dry, not just in this part of the country, and many creeks and rivers have still low water levels and the waterfalls of Haw Creek were not very impressive  to say it mildly. But a hike with the camera on the exposed rocks in the river bed seemed to be promising. Harsh light can be your friend sometimes and these grasses in the river bed, that obviously had not seen a flash flood this summer, stood out against the dark background of the river nicely. The curves of the rocks gives us an idea how the water has carved out this valley over a long period of time.

And here is one of the aspects I like about the Nikon Z 6II, the first mirrorless camera that I use since exactly a year now. I really love the ability to set the camera into a particular picture mode and see a preview of the photo right in the viewfinder before I even make the click. In this matter I set it to monochrome. My presets in camera include a red filter applied to the image and relatively high contrast and sharpening. I still shoot in RAW mode, and if I don’t like the final result, it allows me to go back to color because all color information is still stored in the RAW file. In this case, with “Grasses in the river bed”, it was exactly what I had envisioned and saw in the viewfinder when the click was made, except for the fact that I cropped the final picture slightly.

CAN THE OTHER SEASONS DELIVER?


I love the colors of autumn as you may have seen in recent blog posts. The coloration of the leaves tells a visual story about the season easily. Can we do that in black and white by using light and gestures only? Well, here is a trial. Winter, no tall grass…spring, grass still very short…summer, grass growing, but still not as tall and light never at this quality from that angle…. I guess it must be fall! I’m not totally serious about this, because at the end it’s all about the light that wraps around the swaying grass. Spring, summer, and winter just can’t deliver the same way for this shot…

GOING FOR THE DRAMA (NOT THE BRIDGE)


Rain front moving in over Iowa, Mississippi River, East Dubuque, Illinois

Last Friday evening I went across the Mississippi River to East Dubuque, the northwest corner of the state of Illinois. Over on the Iowa side a rain front moved in and started to cover already partially the low sitting sun. It is tempting to have only an eye for the Julien Dubuque Bridge that connects both states but there was more to consider as the subject for this photo. I was intrigued by the reflections on the water and the drama in the sky above. The bridge as a silhouette still holds the picture together and all lines, from below, above, and from the sides of the image converge near the brightest spot.

I started out shooting in color mode from different angles and distances to the bridge but non of the shots held the drama I saw as a possibility for the final photo. My monochrome settings in the Nikon Z6II apply the effect of a red filter. It gives extreme contrast, darkens the sky and makes the clouds really stand out. Seeing the effect right in the electronic viewfinder or on the camera screen gave me a good direction how I wanted to compose and how my exposure would effect the drama in the scene. Finally, later in post process at the computer, I reduced the effect of the red filter by lowering the contrast a little bit, and making it more looking like an orange filter was used.

Don’t take me wrong, the bridge is a nice subject for a picture, but this was all about the drama in the sky and its reflection on the Mississippi River.

MISSISSIPPI RIVER STORIES 2022 #9 - TUGBOAT AND BARGES GOING UPSTREAM


A convoy of tugboat and 15 barged going upstream

I’m following a famous photographer on social media who always claims, if my gear can do it, I can do it. I totaly agree and I’m not afraid of weather, and when a heavy rain started to come down last Saturday, I thought of it and just finished everything while the equipment got soaking wet. I guess it pays back to invest in cameras and lenses that have weather seals included in their design…

While eating lunch with friends in Clayton, Iowa, just a few feet away from the big river, I saw the barges being pushed upstream, the clouds changing dramatically within seconds, and just felt a picture opportunity is right around the corner.

It’s just amazing how the the tugboats manage to navigate a set of fifteen barges within the small channel that can be used for deep sitting loads in the Mississippi River. This convoy had nothing but coal onboard, probably heading to one of the last coal power plants upstream. I had the pleasure to see a coal powered plant disappear from the landscape not far from home in recent years and I’m pretty sure I will see this again. Coal has no future.

I have been able to remove any kind of digital noise from this image (an article about this topic will follow soon). What’s left is the texture a heavy rain can produce, and that’s what really makes for story telling in this photo. I really love how the light, coming from the back, sets the tugboat and the barges apart from the clouds and the rest of the Mississippi Valley.

MISSISSIPPI RIVER STORIES 2022 #6 - A CLASSIC VIEW


A view I never get tired of, the swivel railroad bridge in Dubuque, Iowa. I made the picture a week ago, when the bridge was open for the barge traffic on the Mississippi River. A “spot light” by the low sitting sun onto the swivel part of the bridge, combined with some lovely clouds, made me push the shutter release button. The photo is pretty much what I saw, with just a little bit of dodge and burn at the cloud reflections on the water. This slight touch in post process reveals what I really had in mind when I took the photo. I know, this classic view has been photographed by many before, including myself. I just couldn’t resist to add another picture… 😉
